Been experimenting further with my layouts for the catalogue brief. Tried to steer away from repeating a layout that I had created over several spreads because this is something that had been brought to my attention during a group critique. I think that this is a valid point because it could lead the user to becoming quite bored by the catalogue and although it would make the catalogue flow by keeping the layout consistent, it doesn’t create my contrast or interest on the pages. I am also trying to experiment with the breaking of the grid and use my instinct and eye to lay out the pages because this was also something that was addressed in the critique about not only my own work but others as well.
The above images are experimental layouts using some place holder text because I want to get this right first before I continue adding text in. Still not feeling very happy or confident about my work just yet. There doesn’t seem to be much flow between the pages and I think that they are inconsistencies within the layout that make in confusing and difficult to look at. I do however like the below two layouts. I think that there working really well and there is an editorial feel to them. There is a good white space balance between the double page spreads and I think that I am going to try and recreate this across the rest of the pages but still changing up the layouts slightly. I think that one of my problems maybe using the McCalls pattern illustrations. Although they work for some pages they feel awkward for others. I do still wish to incorporate them in some way or another but I think that reducing the amount I used them could help.
